Friberg Maria
b. 1966, Sweden
Somewhere Else, 1998, dur 4 min.

Somewhere Else is a video that shows the legs of five men in black suit trousers. Gradually, the men start opening their legs at an escalating pace.

Maria Friberg has used men in black suits in many of her works. The suit symbolises the ordered society dominated by reason and efficiency. Friberg stages situations and scenes, where the logic of the business world no longer applies. Her models are authentic businessmen in black suits she met in Stockholm's City during the research stage of her work. Friberg has depicted black-suited men at a table, in a car, in a pool, on a pillow, in the sand and in a whirlpool.

The themes of Friberg's work are often linked to sexual identity and social relations. Identity has been a prominent theme in the last few decades, especially in feminist art dealing with the social status of women. Maria Friberg applies the same method to men in business suits.
