Clemente Francesco
b. 1952, Italy
Weather Report, 1986

Francesco Clemente enjoys to the full the postmodern individual's freedom to choose his own world and identity, and he depicts himself and his feelings in a flagrantly personal manner. The pictures are individualistic and do not follow the rules of visual representation modelled by history.

Clemente's own term for his works is ideograms. To express something, he does not paint the thing itself, but instead a series of parallel objects or things connected to the subject matter through dreamlike logic. These relational networks become inextricably entangled with other relational networks and no sign or image is any longer the sum of its parts. Thus, interpretation becomes a continuous journey from one perception to the next.

The alteration of weather and seasons is for Clemente a fundamental way of perceiving structure in life. The never-ending cycle and repetition of weather conditions breaks linear time that divides things into old and new, past and future. The chain of associations in Weather Report revolves on the painting's surface from a volcano to ladders and from nails to a sleeping dog like the seasons.
