In Another World
14 May – 21 August
Outsider Art has begun attracting more and more attention in Finland, both among artists and the art public. Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki organises next summer the exhibition In Another World which presents a broad selection of international and Finnish Outsider Art, exploring the edges of contemporary art and the idiosyncratic art produced outside the mainstream.
In Another World presents not only works of art, but also their makers, whose personal worlds are present in the exhibition both as documents and texts. The exhibition shows works from nearly 50 artists from Finland and abroad among them e.g. Alain Bourbonnais (France) , Aloïse Corbaz (Switzerland), Johann Fischer (Austria), Willem van Genk (Netherlands), Madge Gill (Great-Britain), Chris Hipkiss (Great-Britain), Giovanni Battista Podesta (Italy), Vahan Poladian (France), Adolf Wölfli (Switzerland) and Tyyne Esko, Martti Hömppi, and Alpo Koivumäki from Finland.
Relegated to a position on the vague periphery of the art world, Outsider Art is replete with amazing handiwork, exuberant fantasy, intellectual insight, humour and social criticism, as well as agony, traumas, fears, exclusion and obsessive manias.
Art Brut, Outsider Art - or DIY Art as it is commonly known in Finland - is a subject of academic research abroad, where there are also museums dedicated to this art form. We hope that In Another World will bring Outsider Art into the art discourse also in Finland.
The exhibition is organized in co-operation with The Union for Rural Culture and Education and supported by Centre culturel français, Austrian Embassy and Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland
Contact guides are available on Tuesdays 10am-4pm, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays 12pm-6pm, Fridays 2pm-8pm.
