In keeping with the theme of the Fluid Street exhibition, Kiasma is expanding itself beyond the museum building and the core city centre, taking up a presence in the street space in Kallio. It was here that Kiasma launched its four-part, one-year outdoor art project Under the Same Sky in 2000.
Galleria Alkovi, an exhibition space at Helsinginkatu 19, is a project started in 2005 by artist Otto Karvonen. It is essentially an 8-metre-long shop window, which houses changing exhibitions and is a continuation of the street space and its actions on a 24-hour basis. According to Karvonen’s original idea, the street gallery is “an urban art laboratory and a natural continuation of museum exhibition”. Galleria Alkovi will be hosting seven different exhibitions focusing on the special nature of the space and the place during Kiasma’s anniversary year, 2008.
