Vaihe 01: Florian Hecker & Tommi Keränen

The Vaihe 01 concert will feature works by the sound artists Florian Hecker and Tommi Keränen. The joint concert will showcase solo and collaborative works by the two versatile artists, including multi-channel sound pieces.

The performances and sound installations of the German artist and composer Florian Hecker examine and alter our perception of sounds and space. He has collaborated with numerous people, including the visual artist Angela Bulloch, the electronic music pioneer Aphex Twin, and the media artist Cerith Wyn Evans. The piece No Night No Day, created in collaboration with Evans, was presented at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Last year, Hecker had solo exhibitions for his sound installations in the Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art, the IKON Gallery in Birmingham and the Chisenhale Gallery in London.

The visceral energy of live performances and recordings by Tommi Keränen are famous within the global noise music scene. Keränen has performed on electronic instruments with composer Dror Feiler’s orchestra at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Together with the Norwegian artist Lasse Marhaug he has an experimental noise duo called Testicle Hazard. Keränen’s album Bats in the Attic was released last year on Marhaug’s Pica label.

Hecker and Keränen, who have designed instruments together, have previously had works featured in Helsinki at the Äänen Lumo Festival for New Sounds in 2010. The Vaihe 01 concert is the opening salvo of the Vaihe series of “concert experiments” by Äänen Lumo.
